Smith, Nick Jr.

Smith was a touted recruit that struggled as a freshman at Arkansas. The McDonald's All-American suffered a right knee injury that forced him to miss the first six games. He then missed eleven more games managing the knee. He is skinny with a 6'8" wingspan. He averaged 12.5 points, 1.6 rebounds, and 1.7 assists. Smith shot 33.8% from three-point range but his overall field goal percentage of 37.6% is ugly. He made 74% of his foul shots. Smith had two more assists than turnovers. Smith has "wiggle". He can handle the ball well and he uses hesitations and bursts to keep defenders off-balance. Right-handed. Not afraid to talk some mess on the court. The ugliest stat for Smith was that his DEFRTG was 9.2 points worse than the Arkansas team DEFRTG. ...We've seen players struggle to return from knee injuries (Travis Mays always comes to mind). It takes time to trust driving to the basket hard and that showed with Smith. He looked relegated to settling for outside shots. When he did drive he had trouble converting. We believe Smith will be selected in the middle of the first round. We would let someone else try to develop him.

Our best advice: in 2016, the 58th pick was Daniel Hamilton. We advised, "draft Gary Payton II."
