Kylan Boswell is a right-handed point guard with strength, toughness, and intangibles that are easy to like. Boswell averaged 12.3 points, 4.0 rebounds, and 3.0 assists per game at Illinois. He was named to the Big Ten All-Defensive Team and was also on the Academic All-Big Ten Team.
At 6'1" with a 6'7" wingspan and 226 pounds, Boswell has unusual length and strength for a point guard. He is a tough competitor with good footwork, and he uses the Euro-step well. He jumped a 38" max vertical at the NBA Draft Combine. His 8" hand length tied for the smallest among measured prospects at the Combine. Boswell posted a strong 2.72-to-1 assist-to-turnover ratio. He also has experience with USA Basketball, playing at the FIBA U19 World Cup in Hungary and winning a gold medal at the FIBA Americas U16 Championship. ...After this college season, he was All-Tournament at the Portsmouth Invitational. The shooting and efficiency are the problems. Boswell made just 30.7% from three-point range this season, though he did shoot 78.1% from the free throw line. He can defend on the ball, but defense is so much more than just on-ball work. His DDiff was minus 3.1, which complicates the overall defensive projection despite the All-Defensive honor. We think Boswell will be drafted late in round one. We view him as a deep-bench point guard in the NBA. As much as we like the toughness, strength, length, USA Basketball background, and intangibles, the below-average deep shooting and lackluster efficiency are too much for us to look past. We would let someone else draft him.
