B.J. Edwards is a right-handed point guard who seems to have been overlooked in this draft cycle. Edwards averaged 12.7 points, 5.9 rebounds, 4.9 assists, and a whopping 2.3 steals per game at SMU. He led the ACC in steals and was named to the ACC All-Defensive Team. Edwards played his freshman season at Tennessee before finishing with three seasons at SMU. He shot 37.2% from three-point range and 77.1% from the free throw line this season. His 2.55-to-1 assist-to-turnover ratio was strong, and he finished 11th in ACC box score plus/minus. We do not have a listed wingspan for him, but at 6'3" and 188 pounds, Edwards is in the NBA point guard size mix by height and weight. The defensive production is the separator. A plus 5.0 DDiff for a guard is almost unheard of. Edwards consistently gives second efforts, gets steals at a high rate, and creates problems with activity and anticipation. He was the lone NCAA player with three games of at least 20 points, five rebounds, five assists, and five steals. He also had a triple-double with ten steals on Nov. 21, 2025, finishing with 24 points, 13 assists, and 10 steals against Arkansas State. Edwards is good in transition and can finish above the rim. An ankle injury in late February 2026 forced him to be shut down for the rest of the season, which likely did not help his draft visibility. He will also be 24 years old at the start of the NBA season. We do not foresee Edwards being drafted, but we think he deserves strong consideration. The age may work against him, but the defensive impact, steal rate, assist-to-turnover ratio, and competitiveness are real. We view Edwards as a potential top-tier backup point guard in the NBA.
