Aday Mara is the top center prospect in this draft, largely because of how dramatically he impacts games on defense. From Spain, Mara played two seasons at UCLA before breaking out as a key piece in Michigan’s National Championship run. He averaged 12.1 points, 6.8 rebounds, 2.4 assists, and 2.6 blocked shots per game while shooting 66.8% from the field. At 7'3" with a 7'6" wingspan, a 260-pound frame, and a massive 9'9" standing reach, Mara brings rare center dimensions. He does not move his feet especially quickly, but his length, timing, and reach allowed him to block 103 shots in 936 minutes. Shots he did not block were often altered, rushed, or simply passed up for fear of rejection. Mara was named Big Ten Defensive Player of the Year, and his defensive value was backed by his overall impact metrics. He finished second in the Big Ten and fourth in the entire NCAA in box score plus/minus. Mara is not a zero on offense. He is right-handed but uses either hand well near the basket. He has good court vision, makes quality interior passes, and owns an array of pass fakes, including an “okey-doke” that befuddles defenders. His outrageous reach allows him to complete plays other bigs simply cannot. The biggest offensive concern is his free throw shooting, where he converted just 58.5%. With his sturdy base, shot-blocking instincts, passing feel, and ability to finish efficiently around the rim, Mara has a clear NBA pathway. He should be able to bang with NBA bigs physically, and his defensive presence gives him a chance to anchor lineups. We believe Mara can become one of the most effective centers in the NBA if everything goes right.
